We all know there are fast and slow engines - but what makes one faster than another from the manufacturing of briggs - its the CAM SHAFT. take apart 100 of these engines and you will find the manufacturing nearly all the same except on one piece - the cam shaft.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis item is cast and then the pile goes into the oven for heat treating and they warp and move all over the place - big and small, twisted and warped and many are right in the middle of the spec and some are turds and some outstanding. One of the biggest gains is the camshaft profile. From Briggs the cam is manufactured and heat treated after it is produced so it moves and twists all over the place - there is NO final grind so what you have is performance all over the spec. Some super good and some very poor - What do you have? The only way to know is to profile the cam from the lifters - both intake and exhaust. You need a way to hold the dial indicator gauge in the proper spot on top of the lifters. These lifters rid on the cam where you collect the profile from.. This is the tool to find out what you have.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst you must find top dead center by using the solid pin in at the tip of the tool. You must establish a timing mark with a bent piece of wire. Your engine has no timing mark. By rotating the degree wheel back and forth you will split the difference until you get it at zero - TDC. You will have to bend the wire around to get perfect zero. Once zero is established you will start with your gauge on the intake lifter and rotate the degree wheel until you find the base circle of the cam. Set the guage to zero and rotate checking this several times until the zero does not move. Now you are ready to profile  - you will rotate the degree wheel clockwise to .006 on the guage and your first number will be 59 to 51 degrees BTDC then on to .020 and so on. 51 is the good side. You will perform this at each of the numbers and establish a full profile. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe all know the Briggs lo206 engines are the same until the engine builders get done with the little performance tricks and this is the biggest of them all, cam calibration. They are used to hold the end of the crank so you can twist the gear in the picture negative or (Retarted Cam Timing) These tools will only measure the Honda 120 - the other engines the valves are in a different locations and this block will no result in an accurate measurement. The Governing body rule books allow for 2 degrees but for outlaw no more than 4 degree, in QM you can get another degree in the crank end play rule.
